On our way from Osaka to Hiroshima, we made one of the best travel decisions of our Japan trip: stopping to visit Himeji Castle, Japan’s largest and most spectacular historic castle.
If you’re travelling across Japan by train, this is the perfect half-day stop that combines history, architecture, and unforgettable views without needing to change your entire itinerary.

🚄 How to Visit Himeji Castle Between Osaka and Hiroshima
We travelled by Shinkansen from Osaka toward Hiroshima and simply got off at Himeji station along the way.
This is why it’s such a smart stop:
- Himeji Station is directly on the bullet train route
- The castle is only about a 15-minute walk from the station
- You only need half a day to visit
So instead of travelling straight through, you can turn your transfer day into a sightseeing experience.
🏯 Why Himeji Castle Is So Famous
Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It’s often called the White Heron Castle because of its elegant white exterior that looks like a bird taking flight.
Film lovers might also recognise it from You Only Live Twice, starring Sean Connery, which makes visiting feel even more cinematic.
Climbing the Castle: What to Expect
We spent a few hours exploring the castle grounds and climbing all the way to the top. Just a heads-up:
- The stairs inside are steep and narrow
- It can get very hot in summer
- Wear comfortable shoes
It’s definitely a bit of a workout, especially on a warm day, but the views and atmosphere make it worth it.
Should You Book a Guided Tour?
If you have time, I highly recommend booking a guided experience like:
Guided tours make a huge difference because you learn the stories, symbolism, and historical details you’d otherwise miss just walking around on your own.
Don’t Miss the Gardens (If You Have Time)
Right next to the castle is Koko-en Garden, a traditional Japanese garden complex that looks incredibly peaceful and photogenic.
Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to visit Koko-en Garden, and it's probably my biggest regret from our stop in Himeji. If I return one day, it will be the first place I add to my itinerary after exploring the castle.
How Much Time Do You Need?
Ideal visit time: 2–4 hours
That makes it perfect as:
- a stopover between cities
- a half-day trip
- or a cultural break from big cities
You don’t need a full day unless you want to explore slowly or add extra activities nearby.
🎨 Look Down : Himeji’s Hidden Street Art
One of the most unexpected little highlights in Himeji was something most people walk right past: the decorative manhole covers. On the walk from the station toward the castle and back, I spotted three beautifully designed covers featuring artistic motifs that reflect the city’s rich history and cultural identity.
Japan is actually famous for these illustrated manhole covers, and spotting them becomes a fun mini scavenger hunt as you explore. It’s a small detail, but it adds an extra layer of charm to your visit and makes the walk feel even more memorable.
Is Himeji Castle Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
It’s one of those places that feels truly historic the moment you see it. Compared to modern Japanese cities, visiting Himeji feels like stepping into another era.
If you’re travelling between Osaka and Hiroshima anyway, stopping here is honestly a no-brainer.

- Wear trainers, not sandals
- Store luggage at station lockers if in transit

Final Thoughts
Even though it was just a short stop, Himeji Castle became one of the most memorable highlights of our journey. It’s elegant, historic, and surprisingly easy to visit without going out of your way.
Sometimes the best travel moments happen between destinations, and this was definitely one of them.
