In this Stranger Things: The First Shadow London review, I’m sharing my experience from the front row at the Phoenix Theatre, what impressed me most, and what you should know before booking tickets.
After a colleague recommended the play to me, I decided to see it for myself. I managed to get a front-row seat and, honestly, I was a little apprehensive about being that close to the action. With Stranger Things, you never quite know what might be coming your way!

Is Stranger Things: The First Shadow Worth Seeing?
For me, yes, especially if you love Stranger Things or theatre productions that do something visually different.
From the moment the play began, I was completely captivated. The stage effects were spectacular and transported the theatre into the eerie, suspenseful world of Stranger Things.
Being in the front row made everything feel even more intense. The production was genuinely scary in places, and I definitely screamed a few times! But that was also part of what made the experience so memorable.
Rather than simply feeling like I was watching a play, there were moments when I felt pulled right into the world of Hawkins.
What Is Stranger Things: The First Shadow About?
The story takes us back to Hawkins in 1959, long before the events we know from the Netflix series.
We meet younger versions of familiar characters, including Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado and Bob Newby, alongside Henry Creel. The story explores events from Hawkins’ past and adds another layer to the Stranger Things universe.
I won’t give away the plot because discovering what happens is part of the fun.
What I will say is that the combination of story, performances, lighting, sound and special effects creates something that feels much bigger than a conventional stage play.
My Front-Row Experience at the Phoenix Theatre
I wasn’t sure whether sitting in the front row would be a good idea for a production like this.
It was intense, but I loved it.
Being so close allowed me to see the performers and stagecraft in incredible detail, while some of the effects felt even more dramatic from that position.
If you enjoy being completely immersed in a performance, sitting close to the stage can make Stranger Things: The First Shadow especially exciting. If you are sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, or sudden effects, however, you may prefer to sit a little further back.
The Special Effects Are the Real Star
One of the things I remember most is just how impressive the production looks.
The effects, lighting and staging create the feeling that the supernatural world of Stranger Things has somehow escaped Netflix and arrived on a West End stage.
There were moments when I genuinely wondered, “How did they do that?”
For me, that’s one of the strongest reasons to see this show in person. Some experiences simply work better live, and this is definitely one of them.
Do You Need to Be a Stranger Things Fan?
Being familiar with the Netflix series certainly adds to the experience because you’ll recognise characters and understand more of the connections.
But I also think the production has plenty to offer anyone who enjoys imaginative theatre, suspense and impressive stagecraft.
It isn’t simply trying to recreate an episode of the television series. It uses theatre in its own way, which is what made the experience so much fun for me.

The production uses loud noises, explosions, smoke and haze, flashing lights and strobe effects, so it is worth checking the latest official guidance before attending if you are sensitive to these effects.
My Verdict: Should You See Stranger Things: The First Shadow?
Absolutely.
I went in curious and slightly nervous about that front-row seat and came out genuinely impressed by what the production managed to achieve on stage.
The combination of strong performances, spectacular visuals, suspense and the familiar atmosphere of Hawkins made this much more than a conventional theatre night for me.
If you’re a Stranger Things fan, I think seeing this world brought to life on stage is an experience worth having. And even if you’re simply looking for a West End production with incredible stagecraft and something a little different, this is one I would happily recommend.
