Hello Food | Easy Quarantine Recipes

Hello Lovely people, I hope you are all safe and well during the lockdown in these uncertain times. Just to cheer you up and to inspire you hopefully with some easy delicious recipes I made so far in quarantine.

For this blog, I will just pick two of all the recipes I cooked recently. Most likely, you will find any of these recipes on the net. I am not always a strict follower of recipes, because I believe you should make it tasty for yourself. Also, a big thing is, I don’t always have all the ingredients at home. However, if you want to impress a guest with an authentic recipe, you probably should follow the recipe step by step.

RISOTTO ALLA MILANESE

The first recipe, which I was quite impressed by myself is the Risotto Alla Milanese with porcine (mushrooms). To make it authentic click HERE.

Risotto alla Milanese
What do you need?
  • Risotto rice – Arborio
  • Butter
  • Onion finely chopped
  • Beef or chicken bouillon 1 litre more or less
  • Glass of white wine
  • 20g of Saffron powder
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • A bit of salt
To make it delicious and vegan, I substitute the following:
  • Butter – extra virgin olive oil
  • Beef or chicken bouillon – vegetable bouillon and the porcini stock
  • Grated Parmesan cheese – vegan cheese
What's next?

The next step is the most important, after this, you will only need to stir until it is gone. Make sure you prepare the bouillon before, so it is ready to go. If you make it vegan, put some extra water to soak the porcini in, so you can use it as extra bouillon as well.

First, put the butter or olive oil in a pan. Add the chopped onions, stir the onions with the butter/olive oil a few minutes and then add the rice. Stir until the rice is completely covered with the fat of the butter or olive oil. Next, add the glass of white wine and stir. Let the wine breathe, so the alcohol will evaporate. Usually, this will take a few minutes.

After this, your main job is to add a bit of bouillon and keep stirring. Put the fire on medium-low heat and keep stirring and adding bouillon for 15 – 20 minutes. Check how long the rice needs to cook on the package.

The last 10 minutes add the Porcini mushroom in the mix. Put the saffron in a glass with a bit of bouillon before you add it to the risotto. If needed add a bit of salt and once done add the parmesan cheese. Et Voila!

NASI WITH KING PRAWNS

The next recipe I would like to share is a Surinamese inspired Nasi with King Prawns.

Surinamese Nasi with King prawns
What do you need?
  • Maggie cubes (1x or 2x)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • 1 or 2 eggs
  • King’s prawns
  • Any vegetables you like (I went for chopped bell peppers and mushroom)
  • White pepper
  • Ketjas Manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • Soy sauce
  • Basmati rice
  • Salt
What's next?

Make sure your rice is ready to go before you start.
Put the olive oil in a pan and let it heat up for a second before you add the eggs. Add the eggs and stir them up until you think they are done. Remove the eggs and keep them separated.

If needed add a bit more olive oil and heat up a bit before you add the garlic, onions, and Maggie. Wait until the garlic and onions get a bit of color then add the King prawns. Stir this a few minutes before you add the vegetables. Add the Ketjas Manis and Soy sauce (50/50). Taste to see which one you will need a bit more of.

The sauce in the pan will get a bit thick when this happens add the rice and mix it until every part of the rice is brown. Et Voila another delicious recipe done! I have to say this recipe reminds of the Surinamese homemade recipes my Mom makes. I was pretty happy I finally could make something so easy and delicious that reminds me of home.

Below are some other delicious recipes I tried in quarantine. Starting to love cooking and I think I improved a lot.

TIPS

Some basic tips I learned if you make some pasta (Italian) recipes. If you are making pasta with fish or seafood, don’t add some cheese at the end. If you use onions don’t use garlic as well. it is one or the other, which in the Asian cuisine we use both! Of course, you can do whatever you like and think is tasty, when no one is watching 😉

ART | QUARANTINE LIFE April 2020

During the quarantine that we are all in at the moment, I am trying to find my passion again in certain things. So what am I enjoying lately? I wouldn’t expect that I would enjoy painting again, but I did! This Easter weekend I started with a painting that was waiting for me to finish in a very long time. Let’s see, it has been waiting for me since somewhere last year.

This painting started to get a lot of dust, but I knew I wanted to finish it someday. Quite happy I still have my paint stuff around and I finally finished this painting in two days. I did already a lot on this painting last year, like the sexy red background and the lady in nude. So this wasn’t a real struggle to start with.

Happy with the end result – PICTURE TAKEN IN DAYLIGHT

For the couch, I wanted to create a velvet luxurious old couch, but not too realistic. Even if reality is quite hard for me to paint. After I did the couch, the lady needed a bit more definition, so you could see her actually posing very relaxed on the couch. I am very happy with the end result and I got some nice compliments. (which I am really proud of, thanks everyone who likes the painting)

This painting is special to me because it is completely inspired by one of my favorite artists, Modigliani. A few years ago, I went to his exhibition here in London. It was one of the best exhibitions I ever saw. His style and his life story were both very intriguing to me.

Another painting I started and finished this Easter is a painting of one of my favorite dogs in the Netherland, Bento! I have to say this was really a huge challenge. Mainly because it is the first time ever that I painted an animal. The idea to paint an animal made me nervous, so I procrastinated a lot this weekend. I did it today, Monday the second day of Easter, and surprisingly I was done in a few hours. I didn’t want to overdo it.

Bento – TAKEN IN DAY LIGHT (colours look a bit lighter on picture)

The technique I tried to use here is “Alla prima” (wet-on-wet) which means at “first attempted”. However, the background I did this the day before (I cheated a bit), so only Bento, himself, is done “Alla prima”.

Thank you for stopping by. I hope during this uncertain period you, your family and friends are safe and well.  I hope you get inspired to do something you did enjoy before this corona period started, but due to whatever reason left it on the top shelves for a while. Just pick it up slowly, see if you can enjoy it again and take it day by day for now.

Stay Safe lovely people !

Hello Fashion | THIERRY MUGLER: COUTURISSIME

Hello lovely people and welcome back to a fresh blog post just before the end of 2019. I just wanted to share with you my recent visit to this beautiful exhibition, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime in Kunsthal, Rotterdam.

If you haven’t been yet, it is still possible to go until the 8th of March 2020.

This major exhibition will reveal the multiple universes of this undeniably artistic figure – visionary couturier, director, photographer and perfumer – in a retrospective of his work, especially his ready-to-wear and haute couture creations.

Kunsthal exhibition Thierry Mugler: Couturissime
First impression

My first impression was quite surprising. Seeing so many, around 150 pieces, of well crafted and extreme creative pieces of art made by this genius and worn by many celebrities. All created between 1977 and 2014. I recognize a few pieces I saw in video clips back in the days. Just like the Dior exhibition, you will be dragged into the world of the designer and his magnificent creative mind. The use of materials didn’t seem to bother him, as you will see some futuristic pieces in the exhibition.

Displays and settings

There are six rooms with different themes full of mind-blowing pieces Thierry created over the years.

To give you an impression of the collection, the best is to show you in pictures below.

 Designer Thierry Mugler

Thierry was born in StrasbourgFrance. At the age of two, he moved to Paris and started to work for the Parisian boutique, Gudule. Two years later he became a freelance designer and worked on large ready-to-wear fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London, and Barcelona.

He retired from fashion in 2003 and he kept the fragrance business. Angel and Alien are the well-known perfumes by Thierry Mugler.

Despite his retirement from his brand, he designed as exception a dress for Kim Kardashian for the Met Gala in 2019.

Final thoughts

Really happy to have been to this exhibition and seeing the creations of this artist. He embodies Avant-Garde in his creations and inspires many creative minds. He is a huge example of encouraging people to find their talent and creativity and just to go for it. Working hard for it as well.

If you passing by Rotterdam, go and see this exhibition at the Kunsthal. It is till March 2020 and you won’t regret it!

Happy New Year everyone! Miss Widjaja
