HELLO LONDON | ROYAL ACADEMY – COLLECTION GALLERY

Hello Beautiful Souls! Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the Royal Academy to see the free exhibition at the Collection Gallery. And let me tell you, it was an unforgettable experience!

The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the outstanding painting of The Last Supper made by the pupils of Leonardo da Vinci. As I stood in front of the painting, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the amount of detail and precision that went into creating such a masterpiece. It’s no wonder that this painting [as well as the fresco] has captured the hearts of art lovers for centuries.

But that wasn’t the only gem I found at the gallery. I also saw the Taddei Tondo by Michelangelo, which is a stunning relief sculpture of the Virgin and Child. The beauty of this piece left me speechless, and I could feel the emotions evoked by Michelangelo’s intricate work.

Another highlight was seeing the beautiful famous casts of Laocoon, Hercules, Venus, and Jesus in the sculpture of Pieta. These sculptures were so lifelike that it felt as if they would come to life at any moment.

Furthermore, I was amazed by the magnificent copies of tapestries in the Sistine Chapel. The complex details and colours were truly mesmerizing. It was incredible to see the artistry involved in the creation of these tapestries, which have been famous for centuries.

Finally, I was pleasantly surprised to discover some modern art by Antony Green, Dame Paula Rego, and Patrick Procktor. Their works added a contemporary twist to the exhibition and showcased how art has evolved over the years.

But for me, the best part of the exhibition was undoubtedly the painting of The Last Supper. It was a rare opportunity to see a masterpiece that is fading on the original fresco in Milan. The level of detail and precision that went into the painting left me in awe, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for being able to witness such an exceptional piece of art.

In conclusion, my visit to the Royal Academy’s Collection Gallery was a truly memorable experience. I was able to see some of the most magnificent works of art in history, both ancient and modern. If you have the opportunity to visit the gallery at the Royal Academy, I highly recommend it. It is a must-see for any art lover or anyone who appreciates beauty and creativity.

HELLO LONDON | KUMIHIMO – JAPAN HOUSE

Hello Beautiful Souls! Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the Japan House in London again and experiencing the ancient Japanese art of Kumihimo, or silk braiding, by Domyo. The exhibit showcased the intricate and mesmerizing process of creating braided cords by overlapping multiple strands of thread in a consistent, uniform fashion.

Kumihimo has been used in Japan for centuries to create a variety of items such as hair ornaments, belts, and even armour. Today, it is most commonly recognized as the cord that secures the obi sash of a kimono, known as obijime. As I walked through the exhibit, I was amazed at the complexity and precision required to create these beautiful cords.

The exhibit was set to run until June 2023, but there are always free exhibits at Japan House to explore. During my visit, I was lucky enough to attend a traditional tea ceremony, which was a delightful addition to the Kumihimo exhibit. The tea ceremony, or chanoyu, is a ritualistic practice in Japan that involves the preparation and serving of matcha tea.

As the tea ceremony began, I couldn’t help but marvel at the attention to detail in every aspect of the ceremony – from the design of the tea utensils to the precise movements of the tea master. The entire experience was both calming and invigorating at the same time.

Overall, my day at Japan House was a unique and entertaining experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in Japanese culture or art. The kumihimo exhibit was a fascinating display of skill and artistry, and the tea ceremony was a perfect way to relax and reflect on the beauty of it all. So, if you’re ever in London, be sure to stop by Japan House and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Japan.

HELLO LONDON | BRITISH MUSEUM – THE ELGIN MARBLES

Hello Beautiful Souls! Today, let’s talk about one of the most popular attractions in London – the British Museum. As one of the largest museums in the world, the British Museum has a vast collection of over eight million objects from different civilizations and cultures across the globe.

If you love mythical stories, one of the highlights of the British Museum is undoubtedly the Elgin Marbles. These are a collection of ancient Greek sculptures that were once part of the Parthenon temple in Athens. The sculptures were removed from the temple by Lord Elgin, a British diplomat, in the early 19th century and later sold to the British Museum.

The Elgin Marbles consist of a series of friezes depicting the mythical battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. The Lapiths were a legendary tribe in ancient Greece, while the Centaurs were portrayed as half-human and half-horse creatures, often depicted as wild and dangerous. The frieze on the Parthenon depicts a battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs during a wedding ceremony, where the Centaurs, who were guests, became drunk and violent.

The battle scenes on the frieze are incredibly detailed and provide a fascinating glimpse into ancient Greek mythology. The frieze is divided into several sections, with each section depicting a different episode from the battle. The high-relief sculptures are particularly impressive, with the figures appearing to leap out from the stone.

One of the most remarkable things about the Elgin Marbles is the controversy surrounding their ownership. Greece has long campaigned for the return of the sculptures, arguing that they were taken illegally and should be returned to their rightful home. However, the British Museum maintains that the sculptures were acquired legally and should remain in London, where they are a significant part of the museum’s collection.

Regardless of your opinion on the ownership of the Elgin Marbles, there’s no denying that they are an awe-inspiring sight to behold. If you’re a fan of mythology and ancient history, the British Museum is a must-visit destination, and the Elgin Marbles are just one of the many incredible treasures waiting to be discovered there.

The museum is home to an extensive collection of natural wonders, including dinosaurs, rare gems, a wide variety of samples from various areas of natural sciences and much more. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported into a world of fascinating history and science.

One of the highlights of my visit was learning about the history of dinosaurs. The museum’s dinosaur exhibit is one of the largest in the world, featuring a wide range of species and interactive displays that bring these prehistoric creatures to life. I was amazed by the size and complexity of some of these creatures, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder as I explored the exhibit.

Another fascinating aspect of the museum was the Vault, which houses some of the most expensive and rarest items in the entire museum. From precious gems to meteorites, there was a wealth of treasures to discover. It was fascinating to learn about the stories behind these items and how they came to be in the museum’s possession.

Beyond the dinosaur exhibit and the Vault, the Natural History Museum has so much more to offer.
