Looking for a fun and slightly different night out in London? Although Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch has now finished its run at The Other Palace, it perfectly captures why I enjoy exploring London’s smaller theatres.
If you’re looking beyond the West End’s biggest productions, this hilarious parody musical is a great example of the creative shows you can discover across the city. While the production closed in April 2026, I still wanted to share my experience and a few tips for finding similar theatre shows in London.
A Surprise Theatre Treat
I went into this musical knowing very little, and honestly, that made it even better. The show is a clever parody inspired by the world of The Little Mermaid, packed with humour, unexpected twists, and plenty of self-aware comedy. One of the standout elements was the multi-role casting. Watching performers switch characters throughout the show added an extra layer of entertainment. Allie Dart was a highlight, seamlessly playing both Sebastian, the French chef, and Ursula’s evil sidekick. At one point, multiple characters appeared on stage simultaneously, a particularly hilarious moment that really stuck with me.
The songs were catchy and fun, and Sam Buttery as Ursula delivered a fearless, commanding performance that carried the show beautifully. It was one of those shows where I left the theatre smiling, which is always a good sign.
Why Shows Like This Work So Well
This type of production is ideal if you’re looking for something lighthearted and easy to enjoy. It doesn’t require loads of background knowledge, making it a great pick whether you’re planning ahead or choosing something at the last minute.
Theatre Tips for a Great Night Out in London
Even though this show has closed, here are a few tips to help you find similar experiences:
1. Use Apps for Last-Minute Deals
One of the best ways to find affordable theatre tickets is through apps like TodayTix or Ticket Master. You can often find discounted tickets, rush deals, or discover smaller shows you might not have heard about otherwise.
2. Book Smaller Theatres for Better Value
Venues like The Other Palace are more intimate, meaning you don’t need to splurge on expensive seats. I sat near the front right corner and had a fantastic view, but honestly, every seat in the theatre would have worked well.
3. Don’t Over-Research
Sometimes the best experiences come from going in with fresh eyes. If a show sounds fun, take the chance; you might be pleasantly surprised.
4. Try Parodies or Comedy Shows
If you’re after something easy-going and entertaining, parody shows are a great choice. They’re usually fast-paced, funny, and very accessible.
5. Keep an Eye on Limited Runs
Smaller productions often don’t stay around for long, so if something catches your eye, it’s worth booking sooner rather than later.
Looking for Similar Theatre Experiences in London?
Although Unfortunate has now closed, it reminded me that some of my favourite theatre memories have come from smaller productions rather than the biggest West End musicals.
If you’re planning a theatre trip to London, I’d recommend checking what’s currently showing at The Other Palace, as they regularly stage new musicals and limited-run productions.
If you’re after something completely different, another unforgettable theatre experience I loved was Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, which couldn’t be more different in atmosphere but is equally memorable.

Final Thoughts
Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch ticked all the boxes for a fun night out in London: great performances, lots of laughs, and a relaxed atmosphere. Even though it’s no longer running, it’s exactly the kind of theatre experience that makes exploring London’s stage scene so exciting.
I’d happily watch another production like this in the future. It reminded me that sometimes the best theatre experiences are the ones you know the least about before taking your seat.
