Athens in 2 Days: 5 Must-See Attractions for First-Time Visitors

Hello beautiful souls ✨
After two years of pandemic travel pauses, I finally got to explore Athens, the historic capital of Greece, as part of a two-week trip that included five Greek islands. Athens was my first stop, and although I only had two days, it was enough to experience the highlights.
If you’re planning a short stay, this guide covers the top 5 things to do in Athens in 48 hours so you can see the city’s most iconic sights without feeling rushed.

1. Visit the Acropolis (Don’t Skip This)

You simply can’t visit Athens without seeing the Acropolis. Sitting high above the city, it’s one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Booking a guided tour is the best way to gain an in-depth understanding of its history and hidden details. Inside the complex, you’ll see four architectural

masterpieces from 400–500 BC:

  • Parthenon
  • Erechtheion
  • Propylaea
  • Temple of Athena Nike
It’s incredible that structures this ancient still stand today. Many original sculptures were removed centuries ago and are now displayed in museums worldwide, including the British Museum, largely due to the actions of Lord Elgin, who transported Parthenon sculptures to Britain.

2. Explore the Acropolis Museum

If you only visit one museum in Athens, make it the Acropolis Museum.
Inside, you’ll find artefacts discovered on the Acropolis dating from the Greek Bronze Age through Roman and Byzantine periods. Some galleries don’t allow photography, but the sculptures and statues are breathtaking. The museum even recreates original colours on ancient statues, showing how vibrant classical art once looked.

3. Walk Through Athens’ Ancient Landmarks

Athens is basically an open-air museum. Wander through the old town, and you’ll pass ruins and monuments everywhere. Many can be admired from the outside, or you can enter with a ticket.
While walking around Plaka and nearby districts, look out for:
  • Temple of Zeus
  • Hadrian's Arch
  • Hadrian's Library
  • Roman Agora
  • Ancient Agora of Athens
  • Odeon of Herodes Atticus
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, Athens involves a lot of walking and uneven stone paths. This guided tour might be for you: Athens: Discover Greek Culture, History, Monuments & Areas.

4. Watch the Changing of the Guards

At Syntagma Square, outside the Hellenic Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, you can watch the famous Evzones guards perform the ceremonial changing of the guard
every hour.
This tradition dates back to 1868 and is one of the most unique cultural experiences in the city.

5. Stay in Plaka & Visit Monastiraki at Night

If you’re choosing where to stay, Plaka is one of the best areas to consider. Located on the eastern side of the Acropolis hill, it’s filled with:
  • charming narrow streets
  • boutique shops
  • cafés and tavernas
  • postcard-perfect corners
At night, walk to Monastiraki Square, where the illuminated Acropolis creates a magical backdrop.
