Hello Beautiful Souls, Today's English grammar note: Listening and hearing are not quite the same, especially when it comes to music that moves the soul.
On a calm weekday evening, not far from the hustle of Victoria Station, I found myself seated inside the breathtaking Westminster Cathedral, surrounded by soaring arches, candlelit walls, and the serene sounds of J.S. Bach. I had the pleasure of attending a special performance of St John Passion, sung by the renowned Westminster Cathedral Choir on 18th March 2025.
This experience was a little different from my usual theatre or food adventures, more meditative, slower, and deeply spiritual. The choir was absolutely stunning, and the acoustics of the cathedral made every note feel like it floated into eternity. There were even moments of Bach pieces I hadn't heard before, which made it feel even more special.
That said, it was a long evening, around 2.5 hours, so if you're thinking of going, maybe bring a little cushion or make peace with sitting still for a while. It's not something I'd do regularly, but for a peaceful, cultural night out, I did enjoy the change of pace. And truly, what a lovely way to pause midweek and reflect, right in the heart of London.
So if you love beautiful churches, are into sacred music, or just want to experience a side of the city that's more tranquil, I would recommend an evening like this.
The event was a one-night performance held occasionally. I hope Westminster Cathedral continues to host these special evenings. To find out more, keep an eye on their website.
